A study can be reliable without being valid, but it cannot be valid without being reliable. Understanding this is key to a strong Research Design.

Validity refers to the accuracy of your measurement — are you truly measuring what you intend to measure?

Reliability refers to the consistency of your measurement — if you repeat the study, will you get the same results?

These two concepts are the cornerstones of trustworthy and credible research.

Accuracy

What is Validity?

Validity is about whether you are measuring the right thing. There are several types of validity to consider.

Internal Validity

The extent to which you can be confident that a cause-and-effect relationship established in a study cannot be explained by other factors.

External Validity

The extent to which the results of a study can be generalized to other situations, people, settings, and measures.

Construct Validity

The degree to which a test measures what it claims, or purports, to be measuring. Does your survey actually measure 'customer satisfaction'?

Content Validity

The extent to which a measure represents all facets of a given construct. Does your test cover all relevant aspects of the subject?

Consistency

What is Reliability?

Reliability is about whether your measurement is repeatable. If your results are not consistent, they are not reliable.

Test-Retest Reliability

The consistency of results over time. If you give the same test to the same person at different times, the results should be similar.

Inter-Rater Reliability

The degree of agreement between different observers or raters. If multiple researchers are coding qualitative data, they should arrive at similar conclusions.

Internal Consistency

The consistency of the results themselves. For example, if you have a survey with multiple questions measuring the same concept, the responses to those questions should be correlated.

  • Use clear, unambiguous questions and instructions.

Example: Measuring Employee Satisfaction

Poor Measurement (Low Validity)

Asking a single question:

"Are you happy at work?" (Yes/No)

This is not valid because 'happiness' is too broad. It doesn't capture key facets like compensation, work-life balance, or career growth, thus having low content validity.

Good Measurement (High Validity)

Using a multi-item scale:

  • "Rate your satisfaction with your compensation (1-5)."
  • "Rate your satisfaction with your work-life balance (1-5)."
  • "Rate your satisfaction with your career opportunities (1-5)."

This is more valid because it measures multiple, specific constructs related to the overall concept of employee satisfaction, ensuring high content and construct validity.

Common Sources of Error

Systematic Error (Bias)

A consistent, repeatable error that affects the validity of your results. This includes sampling bias, response bias (e.g., social desirability), or measurement bias from flawed instruments.

Mitigation: Use proper sampling techniques, carefully design neutral questions, and pilot test your instruments.

Random Error

Unpredictable, chance-based errors that affect the reliability of your results. This could be due to mood of the participant, misreading a question, or random environmental distractions.

Mitigation: Increase your sample size to minimize the impact of random errors. Ensure standardized procedures for data collection.

Observer Error

When researchers' own characteristics or biases influence the results. This is a threat to both reliability and validity.

Mitigation: Use multiple observers (for inter-rater reliability) and provide rigorous training with clear, objective criteria.

Environmental Effects

Factors in the environment where the research is conducted can affect results, such as a noisy room or poor lighting.

Mitigation: Maintain a consistent and controlled environment for all participants during data collection.
